Cuddling a snake?

A stuffed snake of course.

Yes, it's actually my foster brother's pet snake.

Shandy's first week

I can't believe I still have this dog in foster care. There should be a line of people at the door for this sweet girl.

Gentle
Quiet
Very smart
Young
Nearly house trained
Great size
Low shed ( actually haven't seen any shedding)
Calm
No anxiety
Not nervous
Good eater
Crate trained
Good on the leash
Very dog friendly
Shy but not afraid of strangers

Sorry....can't think of any negatives ;)

Maybe......that she does like to chew. But she IS a retriever. It IS in their nature to have something in their mouth. She has only chewed things from the doggy toy box. She hasn't touched a shoe or household item. She is soooo smart. Simply need to have a generous supply of rawhides, knuckles, hooves or piggy ears and you are all set.

Shandy the World Class "Wrassler"

We found a dog that loves wrassling even more than Charlie does.

( Can you imagine that?)

Shandy first 48 hours

Shandy was one of six Golden mixes that were rescued by Fluffy Dog from a hoarding situation in Alabama.  When we went to Hartland to bring home our new foster, we had five to pick from. After meeting several and taking time to play with a few, we discovered Shandy. She was by far the most timid, and scared. That could be good, or that could be bad, but because our kids have left the house and we both work each day, we decided we had the home environment that might let a timid dog “unwind” and slowly adjust to her new life. Also, our dog, Charlie is like the dog whisper. He has an uncanny way of bringing the shy ones out of their shell. He is calm, social, and very patient. He is a great role model that loves to follow the house rules and structure. It’s amazing to see their transformation as they follow Charlie around. Before we know it he has the foster following all the house rules.

Shandy was indeed very timid when first arriving to her new home. In 48 hours we have seen great changes.  She has found the toy box, and loves anything that squeaks. She will carry a toy around in her mouth and only put it down to exchange it for a more interesting one. We even noticed a few toys taking a bath in the water bowl, because she didn’t want to let loose of the toy for a drink. She has fetched a few tennis balls that have been thrown her way, but hasn’t quite got the idea of bringing it back yet.
Shandy has discovered that taking a walk, or anything else outside, is super fun. In fact we have no problem getting her to go out the front door on a leash (a small challenge the first day). In fact, it’s much harder to get her to come back inside. Walking on the leash has also become much easier. In fact this morning she just strolled beside me without tugging or sniffing or bolting. I am so impressed. Who knew, a  young dog with little exposure to a leash would be so easy to walk. Not perfect, mind you, but very good considering.
Potty training is ongoing. Shandy kept her crate clean both nights, however yesterday when I got home from work we did have a messy crate. This is totally my fault. Monday is the one day each week that I am unable to come home mid-day for a potty break, and it was her first day home alone.  Actually I am surprised she is doing so well, knowing the environment she came from. She does “business” on each walk, and has responded well to the praise we give when she potties outside. I don’t expect it will be long before she gets the hang of this.
We are enjoying the fact that Shandy is very quiet, only barking once at the big dog from across the street as he walked by the house. There has been no whining or crying. Such a good girl.

Shandy the next morning

First night went well. Shandy is very timid, but co-operative and seems to be very bright. After some negotiation she went into her crate. Once in she was quiet all night. The crate was clean this morning, did her business outside, and then gobbled up her breakfast.  All considered, not a bad first morning.

Shandy is listed at 45lbs, but I think she may be a little shy of that mark. She seems thin to me, and we will be working on plumping her up. I will try to get a height measurement soon but she is definitely smaller than most Goldens I’ve met.  She has the most beautiful red fur that is very soft with a small white patch on her chest and just a speckling of white on her nose.

More pictures soon !

Shandy's first night

After a few months off, we have brought home a new foster. We just couldn't resist the beautiful Goldens that have come north from a hoarding situation in AL.

So.....here is Shandy. She's about 1 yr old and a little thin. Just a few pics for now. We will update as we get to know her better.
