Vivi Ann 2 week update

Housetraining – With no accidents in the two weeks she has been here, I’m calling it…...She is “housetrained”!!  She if very reliable, and has unsupervised freedom throughout the house. She has twice notified me of her need to go out, by sitting at the front door. Very good girl. 

Crate- Still sleeping quietly in her crate all night, although she would do equally well in bed with us. But our house rules say “no doggies in bed overnight”.  She also spends her time quietly in the crate when I need to work, but she is VERY ready to get out once I’m home. She will zoom around and needs a good walk to spend some energy. I think if we didn’t have our own dog, Charlie in the house when gone, I would let her have freedom in the house. She is not destructive in any way, and has never counter surfed or found the garbage can. It’s simply too soon to trust the two of them home alone together.

Leash- Better and better every day. She LOVES to walk. 

Food/Eating- Vivi Ann has discovered a love of treats. So much so, that we can get her to “sit” and “lay down” when a treat is in hand. We even get her to go “round and round” in a circle, (following the treat of course). 

Socialization- Vivi Ann and Charlie are becoming good friends, and there has even been some wrassling and roughhousing. However, it took a while and Vivi did want to be the “boss” or “leader” in the beginning. Charlie, being a little on the submissive side, didn’t seem to care. The bossiness didn’t last long and I don’t see the behavior anymore, now that they are best buds. That being said, it would be good to know if you are bringing Vivi into a home with another dominate personality. She also did not react well when meeting the 80lb pitt mix from down the street. Not sure I can blame her tho. He can be intimidating but he’s completely harmless and very friendly. Vivi's cautious behavior may change once she feels secure in her new home.

Coat- Vivi Ann lets me brush her, and clip her nails without complaint. (Although very wiggly) Still no signs of shedding. I would love to see her after a day at the spa !! How beautiful will she be then?

Vivi Ann says camping is hard work

Vivi Ann's one week update. Well almost one week.

Housetraining – NO ACCIDENTS. She has done all her business on our walks, and keeps her crate clean and dry. YAY !!

Crate- Vivi Ann crates easily, sleeps quietly through the night, and waits patiently until released. She also spends time in the crate while I’m at work. She does well with this too, but it breaks my heart to leave her. She really craves the attention of humans, but passes the time well with a kong and other toys. 

Leash- Vivi is getting really good at walking with the leash. We give a lot of freedom to the dogs while walking because we live on a quiet country road. She will quickly learn more leash “manners” if needed. She takes direction well, and checks in often while we walk. 

Food/Eating- Vivi Ann didn’t have much appetite when she first arrived, but once she was off her pain meds (from her spay), that changed quickly. She eats a grain free kibble twice each day and has learned that treats of all kinds are AWESOME !

Socialization- Vivi and our resident dog, Charlie co-exist nicely, however she doesn’t really pay much attention to him. (Poor Charlie. Still waiting for a wrassle match) She much prefers the company of humans. And boy, does she! She is very liberal with the “kisses” and applies them to anyone and everyone she meets. My Son in Law stopped by for a minute last night, and she covered him with licks and kisses until he left. She rides well in the car, and seems to enjoy the adventure of new places and situations. There is no reaction to loud noises and there is very little barking. 

Personality – Now that Vivi Ann is feeling better, there is definitely more pep in her step. She is fun, loving, gentle and smart. She will zoom around when first let out of the crate, but quickly settles down with a chew or is content to sit next to you, after she finishes her zoomies. Her favorite thing in the whole world is to have my husband pet her. She will actually paw his hand until he surrenders and scratches her head. She just wants to hang with her peeps. She has just begun to find the toy box. It will be fun to watch her learn to play. It seems she is most comfortable in the kitchen, for some reason. She will lay on the floor and watch whoever happens to be in there working. Funny girl. Very well balanced in my book. Confident enough to be unafraid of new things, but yet submissive enough to get along with others. I think she would do well with a novice or first time owner, or any home really. 

Coat/Size- We have seen little to no shedding (yet). I haven’t measured or weighed her, but I will. The 16lbs listed seems about right and I think she could stand to gain a little weight. She is slightly longer than she is tall and has a short tail. When I feel her tail there is a nub at the end. Makes me wonder if she possibly “lost” the tip somehow. Who knows? I think she looks a little like a miniature Australian Shepherd (blue eyes too) but perhaps a Yorkie mix might be a better guess based on her coloring and personality. I also learned that some dapple dachshunds have blue eyes, so maybe there is a little bit of doxie going on. Whatever she is, she sure is easy to love.

I have to admit, I don't really have any "rules" when we walk. The dogs are pretty free to sniff and wander.

That being said, I am certain that Vivi has the skills to learn your personal walking rules. She's a great listener and loves to follow direction.
