Rogue first update

Now that we have had Rogue for a few days I thought I would update you on what we know.

Keep in mind that the info below may change as he gets used to his new surroundings. 

And he may behave differently in a different home.

Housetraining –  Rogue has had no accidents in my home, and has never tried to mark.  Last night he surprised me by going to the back door and scratching. Sure enough, when I opened the door he ran out, did his business, and ran right back in to sit for a “cookie”. After all the dogs I have fostered, none of them have every done that for me. Yay for Rogue-er !!

Crate- Rogue crates very easily. All we do is open the door and he runs right in. He spends his time quietly and sits patiently for us to open the door again. We give him lots of toys and either a Kong or Bully Stick while he’s in the crate.

Leash- He just loves his walks, but he is no expert with the leash. I think this is pretty new to him, but he has no complaints about it. Currently he wanders side to side and occasionally crowds my legs, but he is getting better and better each day. There is no pulling or dragging, and he takes direction very well. He will have this mastered in no time.

Food/Eating- Rogue loves meal time, and is not the least bit picky. He is eating a grain-free kibble twice each day. I do feed him in his crate as he tends to eat very quickly and then goes looking for more in our resident dog’s bowl. Not to worry. There is no aggression or guarding around food, he’s just a very hungry young pup. I think he could stand to gain a little weight.

Socialization- Rogue does great with our Charlie (although they haven’t started wrasslin yet), and seems to love everyone. Unfortunately, we have not had the chance to get out and meet any new people or pups. Hopefully this weekend will offer an opportunity for that, and we will report back.  He seems very comfortable in the house and has no reaction to household activity or noises. In fact, he seems to love the activity and wants to be involved in everything.

Personality – Rogue’s glass is always half full. Happy, loving and enthusiastic. He is a busy guy, but not in a bad way. He just loves to be in the center of everything. Someone might think perhaps he was not given much attention in his previous life, and he is making up for lost time. He is not “hyper”. He just wants so badly to be part of the family. He loves toys. He will carry them around. Throw them in the air, and chase them as they land. It’s quite entertaining. He also plays fetch for a bit, until he decides he would rather play with the toy, than bring it back. Rogue loves a good cuddle and is very liberal with the kisses. Here too, he is currently very enthusiastic. He will actually try to beat you to your sitting spot just so you can’t possibly forget him. I’m sure with time, he will realize that his person is not going anywhere and will love him no matter what and he won’t need to try soooo hard, but for now we are happy to oblige.

Coat/Size – Rogue is my favorite size at around 20 lbs. He’s big enough to get in and out of a car himself. Big enough to get on and off the bed. Big enough to keep up on a brisk walk. But he is small enough to keep in an apartment. Small enough to lift and carry if needed. Small enough that it doesn’t break the bank when you buy food at the pet store. Small enough to be good with seniors and kids. You get the idea. Rogue is a little longer than he is tall. I will get measurements soon. His coat is very short right now, but it seems to be soft and silky. I haven’t noticed any shedding. I have to admit that our lifestyle is not conducive to keeping that long feathery tail in good condition. I believe we have some knots that I need to work on. I guess that’s on the “to do” list for this weekend.

Rogue is listed as 2 years old and that may very well be correct, but to me acts a bit younger. I see some puppy behaviors. He will use a shoe or slipper as a toy, and he is very curious about everything. That being said, he also is beautifully housetrained, and he will automatically “sit” for every treat without being asked, and he sits every time I bring out the leash. This would indicate that he is a bit older, and that he has had some training. So, if you’re looking for a puppy but don’t want to deal with the work, Rogue may be the perfect fit
